We held to our tradition of making it up to run on the Appalachian Trail on New Year’s Eve, even though the group wasn’t up to running the full Maryland Challenge this year. Well, Michelle was in shape for it, but the rest of us weren’t! This year, we slept in and started at I-70 and ran to the base of Weverton Cliffs for a total of 20 miles. It was a gorgeous day for a run! Michelle, Amanda, Katie, and I started at I-70, with Megan and Bill as our excellent crew. They had a great spread of food out for us at South Mountain, even though we felt less deserving of the royal treatment, having only gone about 7 miles at that point! Paul and Kevin drove up and met us at Gathland and I took over kid-duty and Paul and Kevin joined the group. This year the runners even stopped to enjoy the view from the overlook before descending at Weverton --usually we are much too cold and tired (plus it is typically after sunset) to make the diversion when we are running the full distance. The benefit of the shortened version was that we were able to get to the post-run partying that much sooner (and with a whole lot more energy though admittedly I still don't think any of us stayed up til midnight). Michelle posted these pictures.
Also, thanks to Michelle’s excellent recordkeeping, here is a summary from the past years:

Wow --- Congratulations to all!
Looks like you all had a fun day with excellent weather. Who can imagine running in shorts, single layers of shirts and no hats in the first week of January on the AT in Maryland. Life is good.
